While we’ve yet to find anyone who is attempting what we are attempting in full, there are a few cool variants we’d like to give our respect to. Knowing that there are others out there with similar ideas who are willing to put them into practice lets us sleep better at night.
The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect - A Novel by Roger Williams was discovered during research for the essay on this site regarding neo-patronage. Roger Williams also wrote the essay The Tip Jar as Revenue Model: A Real-World Experiment after putting his novel online with a link to a tip-jar for contributions. He did not have a trade-paperback available at the time, though it seems he does now - it, however, is fixed price and does not follow our model.
Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom - Cory Doctorow - This book was released for free online at the same time that is was made available in bookstores via Tor Books. He gives some great reasons for why he did this that are in line with much of what we discuss on the site. He doesn’t accept contributions because he is concerned that doing so might compete with his traditional publisher. He also gave an amazing anti-DRM speech to Microsoft that we highly recommend reading and is involved in all sorts of other cool stuff, too.
