We're looking for suggestions on ways to spread the word of Another Sky Press and our releases. Definitely want it to be something grass-roots where we can get the point of ASP across without coming across too heavy-handed and in a way that will get people excited about it. Suggestions? Any outlets that would be receptive to the concept of Another Sky Press? Know of a person/place/site that would dig 'Click'? Our budget is small (i.e. zero) but we want to get the word out - we've come up with some ideas but we've gotta be overlooking hundreds more.

Hi--I thought of four ideas--bring the bookmarks to colleges/ art schools/ etc and place them in the library / lunch room/bullintin board(even coffee houses).Maybe you could ask the artist Jesse if he would mail a bookmark out with his artwork when he sells one. Ask people to link you up with their websites. Ask the people who buy your book to pass some bookmarks along--put like 5 or 6 in each book.you probably already thought of these but,as it is,I'm going to start by putting the booksmarks at PAFA--in Philadelphia--lets try to get all over the country(THE WORLD)!I think it also will help when you get a few more really good books up--each writer has many other people that he branches out with..--peace

Hadn't thought of the library! Well, at least I hadn't thought of it - maybe Kristopher did and was keeping that idea a secret. That is definitely a great suggestion! We started including Jesse's stickers with our books, but I'm not sure if it's reciprocal - we should make sure he gets a pile of bookmarks to send to all of his supporters.

If you run out of bookmarks, you know where to find us to get more!

I know Kristopher used to, and maybe still does, do stuff on portland.tribe; he should find communities relevant and post a link to this site... offer a place for artists/authors, and mention to book/music/art fans a place to find independent, affordable, reasonable joy. Already being online is a huge part of me actually looking anything up; the bookmark is definitely a good idea, but for me, unless it's something I really really want, I won't remember to type it in, look it up. But if I'm already online, and see the link on a site, I'll open in a new window, check it out, and maybe go further.

  5. i've already updated my various profiles around the metaverse - friendster, myspace, tribe and have even posted to a couple of tribes - though really, i should do more of that when time allows.

if any of you have online communities that you feel like spreading the word to, it would be greatly appreciated. the intarweb is a powerful thing and it is what makes this entire concept feasible... but people need to spread the word. as with anything relying on the power of grass roots - one person is only the beginning, and it spreads from there.

so yea, if you'd like to support another sky and/or Click then posting a notice about it on your favorite online bulletin board, or emailing some friends, or adding it to your myspace profile would be a huge help. huge. and you'd sure have my eternal thanks.

If you reply to my question I submitted through the contact form, I'll gladly do my bit ;)

I imagine Warren Ellis' plug would have helped matters too.

  8. I am in a band called This Love Machine. I am going to print out small business card size ads and hand them out for free at our shows and include inside our cds (which we give out free). I will also create and put a banner on our myspace which has about 40K friends. This is an amazinig movement that I have been waiting for, and too afraid to start on my own. You have my love, my support and my complete commitment.

I'll happily spread the word on a few different message boards I'm on, on bebo and also by word of mouth. I actually got here via slashdot, so well done to whoever posted it there!

How about getting features done in local newspapers or on news websites? You usually get a free write up and it's really valuable advertising!

I'll also put links on my own website (when I get it online!) and spread the word via there too!

Edit: I'll also tell my friend's dad about it. He's the boss (for want of a better word) of the Linen Hall Library here in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It's probably the best source in Ireland for historical information and new ideas and books, so that's one valuable resource anyway! I'll also tell all my English Literature friends to check it out!

My name's Matthew Wayne Selznick -- I found out about Another Sky through the Slashdot post (and was happy I was still actually able to get through to the site after that!)

I'm firmly committed to the DIY ethic and the artist-"consumer"-as-peers approach. My own first book, "Brave Men Run - A Novel of the Sovereign Era" is completely self-produced (except for the printing and shipping, for which I used Lulu.com.) It was the first work of original fiction to be released simultaneously in paperback, e-book in five formats (with no DRM), and free podcast edition, and the text is licensed under a Creative Commons Developing Nations license.

Not trying (okay, maybe a little) to turn this into a commercial -- I'm here because I have additional ways to help promote ASP in the podcasting world.

I've got an open invitation to be a guest host on "The Writing Show," a DIY-friendly podcast dedicated to helping writers and exposing new opportunities. If you'd like to be interviewed for the show, I'd love to do that.

You may also want to contact Mur Lafferty to see about being featured on her very popular podcast, "I Should Be Writing."

I also let the folks at Podiobooks.com know about you. If you're not familiar with the site, they offer podcast versions ("podiobooks") of independent authors' books for free, unrestricted listening. Donations are accepted, and they have some brief sponsorships injected at the beginning of each chapter. Authors get half of the donations, and a cut of the sponsor income.

Naturally, your authors could podcast their materials on Podiobooks.com without any official partnership... but I think ASP and Podiobooks.com are like two aspens in a forest... at the roots, it's the same tree. I recommend getting in touch with them.

Also -- have you utilized PRWeb? You can post a press release for free, and pay for additional tracking and other services. Every opportunity helps..!

Finally, for what it's worth, I told my own tiny blog audience about you guys, and I'll be using you as an example of where publishing is headed when I give a talk / book-signing next weekend.

I just dropped a comment on John Scalzi's blog: http://www.scalzi.com/whatever/004309.html. It ain't Slashdot, but it might help a little.

  13. Wow. Thank you! You made my day with "The nearest I could describe it with my limited reading range is like a young, punk Haruki Murakami just beginning to explore his powers."

As a side note - the book online isn't scanned - it's press quality PDF exported to image files.

There is a good chance a pure PDF will be up soon, but there are some issues with that being worked out.

Hello, Matthew! Long post to reply to - but I'll try to hit every point. This post might be a bit spastic as a result.

First off, I checked out your site - would you be interested in a book trade? I love how people describe your book as a graphic novel in text form... it definitely sounds interesting. I also read the first chapter - and would be into reading more of it.

ASP is actually starting up a 'spotlight' feature on various other indy/DIY/experimental publishing ventures - it looks like you fit the bill, so let us know if you'd be interested in that.

As for the podcasts - let's talk off-forum about those.

Podiobooks - I'm actually working on turning Click into an audio book (of sorts). I'm suprised at the number of requests I've had for one -- it's not something I had really considered before. If it is ever completed, it would likely be released direct through ASP (no ads, etc, etc) but I suppose it couldn't hurt to release it through podiobooks as well (I assume they don't request exclusive rights?)... and if someone is interested they can listen to it for free on this site.

They have also been added to the 'spotlight' list, and somebody here will (eventually) get in contact with them. In fact, if you're interested in doing a write-up on them that could be posted in ASP's (soon-to-exist) spotlight section, feel free to submit something for consideration.

PRWeb - Have you found success with this? The site straight-up scares me.

and thank you for your kind words!

    Sure! I'll follow-up when I reply to your e-mail.

You betcha! I'd love that... and thanks!

Yeah, Podiobooks.com is non-exclusive. In fact, they don't request *any* rights. When I first released the Brave Men Run podcast, they were one of three RSS feeds I had distributing the 'cast.

And just to be clear: it *is* free to listen to books on Podiobooks.com. Donations are voluntary, and split fifty/fifty between Podiobooks.com and the author. While they do run a short ad, that's to supplement the growth of the site, and (one day, perhaps) pay authors.

PRWeb - Have you found success with this? The site straight-up scares me.

I've used their free service, and paid at the... I think $40.00? level to get some statistics. For the release I had statistics available to view, my release was definately viewed by a few hundred outlets. I was never contacted by anyone for follow-up, and I don't know if anyone printed the release as-is.

However, free is free -- doesn't take much effort to throw something out there. I try to take advantage of every resource that fits my zero-budget business model. ;-)

Keep up the good work... I've been spreading the word about Another Sky any time the discrussion turns to alternative publishing, DIY, or the Internet meritocratic economy... (Okay, that last one doesn't happen that often, but I'm trying!)
