This new forum (and, eventually, the new site) are Gravatar enabled! What does this mean? Go to http://www.gravatar.com and set up an avatar to go along with your posts/replies/etc. They will automatically appear here and anywhere else that is Gravatar enabled (it's popular and will hopefully become even more so).

If you go to your profile page you should now see a tab for Avatar. This will allow you to upload an avatar which will be shown next to your forum posts (and soon, blog comments once the site is upgraded). The avatar you upload will permanently override any Gravatar you might have. There is also an option called 'Identicon' which essentially auto-creates a unique fractal type image based on your ip and name.

MemberI decided to try the 'identicon' function while I thought about what I wanted to use for my avatar. The 'identicon' image created isn't bad and I just might stay with it.
I'm wondering if it will show up for old posts. Here goes............

I think we can make it so everyone defaults to an Identicon if they don't have a Gravatar or upload an avatar. Good idea? Bad idea?

MemberI think it's a good idea. When there's a long thread it would make it easier to follow the back and forth. And members can always add their own avatar.
The only issue is does a Gravatar override an Identicon? On the profile page it looks like adding an avatar will but it's unclear for a Gravatar.

The precedence for gravatars is now:
1. Uploaded avatar.
2. Gravatar

It's smaller than the others because it's not square - and there is a max height/width. We can make the images bigger if everyone thinks it's a good idea.

MemberBigger's ok but remember it sets the minimum vertical space for each comment. Short comments can end up taking a lot of space (look at camden's entry above this one). So not too big.
Can the 'user name' and 'user type' be moved to the right of the avatar? This helps the vertical problem but might create a problem for the horizontal direction (taking room from text).
