This new forum (and, eventually, the new site) are Gravatar enabled! What does this mean? Go to http://www.gravatar.com and set up an avatar to go along with your posts/replies/etc. They will automatically appear here and anywhere else that is Gravatar enabled (it's popular and will hopefully become even more so).

Hey all,

We just converted our forums to new software.

The only known issue is that you'll need to get your password reset to use these new forums. Once you are properly logged in, you should be able to go to your profile page and change your password to whatever you want.

We're in the midst of upgrading our entire site, and this is just one step along the way. This new forum software will (eventually) be better integrated with the rest of our site instead of being buried deep where no one ever finds it.

The other long term benefit of the software switch is that the user accounts will be the same as for the rest of our site - which will soon have a lot more focus on events, authors, and artists. For example, everyone associated with ASP will be able to post blogs. We also have a few other tricks up our sleeves in the longer term. Your forum account will be the same as on the site once the site itself makes the upgrade switch.

You'll know when - the main site will look quite different.

All the best,
Anyway, I bought Click last night after the reading at Powell's. The piece you read really spoke to me, as my grandma died about three weeks ago, and you read about the character's dying grandfather. I kept thinking, Yeah, I felt that, or I thought that.

I'm looking forward to more.

Hey, I'm glad you enjoyed the reading, though feel for your loss. In addition to 'Going Back', there's another chapter in Click you might appreciate for similar reasons - 'Their Starkness', about the loss of the narrator's uncle.

itheresa wrote:

I have been reading it. Maybe I'm a third of the way through. I get the feeling when I read it that I get when I watch a David Lynch film, that each scene is its own story.

I take that as a major compliment. Thank you. I agree that most chapters could be considered stand alone - though I also think there is a lot to be learned about each chapter through reading other chapters - imagery and events may take on new meaning.

Caleb wrote:

Strangely enough, that's exactly how I read the novel the third time through. I literally opened the book to a random page, read a chapter, then went on to another random chapter until I had all of them checked off. It was a completely different, but equally valid, I suspect, experience.

That's an equally high compliment. It feels really good to know people are digging deep into Click. I would think you likely learned a lot about the book reading it randomly. I almost read 'Above Me' at the reading until Christine pointed out that it was effectively set in the same room as 'Eyes and Cockroaches' (though one in memory, and one in dream/hallucination). That connection is extremely subtle, so I doubt anyone at the reading would have picked up on, but it led me to read 'Going Back' instead of 'Above Me'. Glad I did.

Anyway, thanks all for the kind words. Made my day.

Hey-

Thanks for getting this thread started, it was a nice way to meet you all. I am kind of late on this but I hope you guys will read it.

I discovered Another Sky through reading the Chuck Palahniuk website and heard they were doing some great things. I read Click, which by the way Kris, was f'n real. After reading Click, I decided that I would try to be a part of something great like this and submit some of the material I have been working on lately. Still haven't heard back, but we'll see.

I am 24 years old and believe or not I am a Big Four Accountant from the East Coast of the states. I have been writing feverishly of late. I wrote mostly screenplays in college but I feel a novel is a more direct form of getting my message out. I travel all over the country every week for my job, so the material is of constant flow. I am basically trying to get my start and am writing in the mass amount of time my firm gives me to study for the CPA exam. Oops! I was looking for a place to submit some work and found this.

It would be nice to get to know you all.

Best,
I recieved my copy in the mail today. I've got to say that I am beyond impressed with the included work. Absolutely stunning.

Kendra Binney, Ryan Bodiroga (his untitled work on page 11 screams to be a book cover), Tom Keating (this animated short he had a hand in kept my jaw low for hours: http://tomkeating-art.blogspot.com/2007/09/animation-by-adam-long-tom-keating.html), and of course Jesse Reno all delivered more than I could have ever expected.

Great work to everyone involved, and thank you for moving me in a way that visual art hasn't in too long.

So, I saw the movie. For free (thankfully). I don't think Click has anything to worry about. Cage's ability to see exactly 2 minutes into the future didn't play out the way Click's narrators ability to affect 'now' does, though there was one similar scene, sort of. As suspected, it's an action film that doesn't delve into any real psychological or philosophical issues. Also worth noting is that the audience I saw the film with booed at the screen... had I not been interested in the film due to this thread, I'm not sure I would have been able to sit through the entirety of it.

Chuck has his own voice - that's inarguable - and he uses it recurrently in each novel. I like it because it's unique and carries a, hmm, "contemporary appeal." As if it's some sort of post-modern slang or method of speaking. BUT, what happens is, he can tend to overuse that voice.

I recently finished Chuck's newest, Rant (review at Dogmatika: http://dogmatika.com/dm/books_more.php?id=2616_0_3_0_M) and came to this exact same conclusion, though I suppose a few books later than you did, Craig. Chuck seems to be exploiting his own voice after so many novels. Can't say I blame him, it seems to be working for him. And it gets people reading.

Thanks for all the kind words... but sequel? Wouldn't that sort of retroactively determine the resolution/conclusion of Click? I'm not sure I'm interested in ever doing that. That said, there are definitely some concepts in Click I could see revisiting someday... perhaps a sequel that isn't a sequel?

So very excited...finally got my pre-orders in today (thanks Kristopher for helping me to work out how much to add for UK postage etc!) and am planning what to do with my lovely shiny copies. I know I'll have to wait a couple of months to get my hands on them, but still...

Copy to my Great Aunt, for sure, because there's no way in the world she'll ever use the internet (NOT a silver surfer...complains enough about using the kettle, so there's not much hope!) And copies to various close family members. None of my family will actually read it though so I think I'll bookcross the remaining copies because I'm sure random strangers will think it's awesome. There are a couple of prominent bookcrossing zones in Cambridge where there's a high probability of the book getting picked up and passed around :)

A couple of my friends put in pre-orders today, too. And I get the feeling that a lot of people are hanging on for when the book is actually out, so that they can buy direct from Amazon or whatever. All good, anyway ;D
either way ive written two books prior to this. i dont plan on publishing them ever. one was poetry and got lost when my comp got a virus and died (stupid technology) and the other was a series of chapters describing different events in my life. 100% nonfiction. raw content. never going to be published because i feel like im a better writer now than i was then and im working on a book now. along the lines of the last but focusing more on the present rather than retelling old annecdotes. a lot of it is just ranting in a creative way or taking a small insignificant part of my day and explaining why it meant so much to me.

Think boyf will like it...but will only dump him if he doesn't like MY novels (just kidding!) ;D

Happy New Year to all. Resolutions? Hmm. To quit with the libations is not an option. So, to write. I have two potential novels in the embryonic stage, one quite personal, and the other a cyberpunk kind of thing. To spread the good word of real writing by real writers. To implement ideas for upcoming Another Sky projects. To find a new job that only requires the usual forty hours, and also gives me health benefits since I haven't found a way to age backward yet. To find a way to curtail my violent impulses when confronted with mouth-breathers, warmongers, and socio-parasites. To withold same impulses when dealing with those who want to regulate every aspect of life and shred personal freedom. To find a good beer under $5.00 a pint at bars in Manhattan.

I'm a tad late on this topic but heck here I go.

I knew I wouldn't manage 50K words, so I just wrote as much as I could. The end result is quite satisfying, 11,500 words of "chassé-croisé" between Montréal, Paris, Tokyo and Brooklyn, a hectic journey into alley and cemetary land, hum yummi.

I think it would be great for another release at ASP (hint, hint :) but it's in French for now.

If you manage some French, it's on my blog at http://lkm696.blogspot.com and it's called "Ell&Il" which means "She & He", I've just taken out the last E of Elle because... well read it :)

Hard to pick one. I loved so much... but maybe, the chapter about the narrator's grandfather, 'Going Back'? Moved me to tears, and I don't cry easy. It's really hard to pick just one out. Some of the more dream-like chapters were absolutely beautiful in imagery. And it's hard to deny the absolute intensity of the first chapter.

The magic eight ball says 'Ask Again Later'. So I asked it again about 10 seconds later and the reply was 'Most Likely'.
