Anyway, I bought Click last night after the reading at Powell's. The piece you read really spoke to me, as my grandma died about three weeks ago, and you read about the character's dying grandfather. I kept thinking, Yeah, I felt that, or I thought that.

I'm looking forward to more.

Hey, I'm glad you enjoyed the reading, though feel for your loss. In addition to 'Going Back', there's another chapter in Click you might appreciate for similar reasons - 'Their Starkness', about the loss of the narrator's uncle.

itheresa wrote:

I have been reading it. Maybe I'm a third of the way through. I get the feeling when I read it that I get when I watch a David Lynch film, that each scene is its own story.

I take that as a major compliment. Thank you. I agree that most chapters could be considered stand alone - though I also think there is a lot to be learned about each chapter through reading other chapters - imagery and events may take on new meaning.

Caleb wrote:

Strangely enough, that's exactly how I read the novel the third time through. I literally opened the book to a random page, read a chapter, then went on to another random chapter until I had all of them checked off. It was a completely different, but equally valid, I suspect, experience.

That's an equally high compliment. It feels really good to know people are digging deep into Click. I would think you likely learned a lot about the book reading it randomly. I almost read 'Above Me' at the reading until Christine pointed out that it was effectively set in the same room as 'Eyes and Cockroaches' (though one in memory, and one in dream/hallucination). That connection is extremely subtle, so I doubt anyone at the reading would have picked up on, but it led me to read 'Going Back' instead of 'Above Me'. Glad I did.

Anyway, thanks all for the kind words. Made my day.

I recieved my copy in the mail today. I've got to say that I am beyond impressed with the included work. Absolutely stunning.

Kendra Binney, Ryan Bodiroga (his untitled work on page 11 screams to be a book cover), Tom Keating (this animated short he had a hand in kept my jaw low for hours: http://tomkeating-art.blogspot.com/2007/09/animation-by-adam-long-tom-keating.html), and of course Jesse Reno all delivered more than I could have ever expected.

Great work to everyone involved, and thank you for moving me in a way that visual art hasn't in too long.

We're probably going to be doing a big reading in Portland in September - Daniel Scott Buck is working on setting that up.
So, I saw the movie. For free (thankfully). I don't think Click has anything to worry about. Cage's ability to see exactly 2 minutes into the future didn't play out the way Click's narrators ability to affect 'now' does, though there was one similar scene, sort of. As suspected, it's an action film that doesn't delve into any real psychological or philosophical issues. Also worth noting is that the audience I saw the film with booed at the screen... had I not been interested in the film due to this thread, I'm not sure I would have been able to sit through the entirety of it.

Thanks for all the kind words... but sequel? Wouldn't that sort of retroactively determine the resolution/conclusion of Click? I'm not sure I'm interested in ever doing that. That said, there are definitely some concepts in Click I could see revisiting someday... perhaps a sequel that isn't a sequel?

So very excited...finally got my pre-orders in today (thanks Kristopher for helping me to work out how much to add for UK postage etc!) and am planning what to do with my lovely shiny copies. I know I'll have to wait a couple of months to get my hands on them, but still...

Copy to my Great Aunt, for sure, because there's no way in the world she'll ever use the internet (NOT a silver surfer...complains enough about using the kettle, so there's not much hope!) And copies to various close family members. None of my family will actually read it though so I think I'll bookcross the remaining copies because I'm sure random strangers will think it's awesome. There are a couple of prominent bookcrossing zones in Cambridge where there's a high probability of the book getting picked up and passed around :)

A couple of my friends put in pre-orders today, too. And I get the feeling that a lot of people are hanging on for when the book is actually out, so that they can buy direct from Amazon or whatever. All good, anyway ;D
either way ive written two books prior to this. i dont plan on publishing them ever. one was poetry and got lost when my comp got a virus and died (stupid technology) and the other was a series of chapters describing different events in my life. 100% nonfiction. raw content. never going to be published because i feel like im a better writer now than i was then and im working on a book now. along the lines of the last but focusing more on the present rather than retelling old annecdotes. a lot of it is just ranting in a creative way or taking a small insignificant part of my day and explaining why it meant so much to me.

Hard to pick one. I loved so much... but maybe, the chapter about the narrator's grandfather, 'Going Back'? Moved me to tears, and I don't cry easy. It's really hard to pick just one out. Some of the more dream-like chapters were absolutely beautiful in imagery. And it's hard to deny the absolute intensity of the first chapter.
"Section to wonderful section, you're never quite sure if Young's anti-hero is awake, asleep, somewhere in between. Living? Dreaming? Hallucinating? You almost want drugs to be involved, but they aren't, which just makes the book more alive, aware, awake."

Thank you. I loved everything about your review (it's always good to hear such kind words from someone I've never met) but the above quote in particular struck me just right. I fought hard to maintain that... balance of instability, and there were times when I had no idea how readers would engage with it. There are chapters which can be read as any of the above: awake/asleep/between/hallucinating/etc - and that decision is intentionally left up to the reader. As a result I always find it interesting to hear different readers' interpretations of both the book as a whole and of specific chapters - some readers are downright positive that he's crazy; others are positive he's not. And both are correct in their own way - reader interpretation is just as important as author intention (especially if part of the intent is to provide multiple interpretations).

So, again, thank you. It's all about what you said - never being sure. Not knowing. Just like him.

There is already a thread in another category about spreading the word for Another Sky Press. If you'd like to help spread the word about Click, these are some very specific things you could do:

1. Review and/or rate Click on
Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0977605108/
Powells: http://www.powells.com/n/99/biblio/1-0977605108-0
and anywhere else you can think of.

2. Include Click in a list of favorite books on Amazon's Listmania! and So You'd Like To... features. It's usually best to keep it with other books with a similar feel. This has a ton of potential, as I know many people (including myself) like to find new books to read via these lists.

3. If you have a Myspace account, add http://www.myspace.org/clickthenovel as a friend.

4. Better yet, post a Myspace Bulletin and put Click in your top 8 on Myspace.

3. http://del.icio.us/ is a group bookmarking site. Add anothersky.org to your account, and our popularity will rise.

4. Submit well written blurbs to your favorite blogger as well as any sites that you think might be interested in either Click or the way Another Sky Press works, or both.

5. Write a review and post it on the forums.

6. Tell your friends. I know this seems obvious, but it's incredibly important. I'd say almost every book I've ever read was because of someone telling me I should read it.

I will add more as I think of them, and feel free to suggest more yourselves.

Thank you. Deeply.

That makes sense. I wasn't sure if the first loop was in Chapter 1 or in Chapter 3. I think I like it better if the first loop is in Chapter 1 - and the main character just didn't realize it yet. Reading it a second time has definitely been interesting, I'm noticing tons of stuff that I didn't before.

I love the way the city is alive--you feel the earth under you,the people, everything!

This book has so much intensity----Click has you leaning agaist the walls--peeking around the corners in all its glorious paranoia. You just need to get to the end. I love the ending.

Heh, for some reason, when you mentioned Bester I was thinking you mean there were stylistic similarities. Bester has that certain rhythmic style to him, almost pulp, almost like a screenplay, at times more visual (including how it's set on the page) than textual. And so when you mentioned him, I was trying to figure out how Click compared to Bester in that way.

But yes, now that you've got me thinking in themes, yes, certainly, there are definite similarities. As mentioned earlier in this thread, the ending of The Stars My Destination has always meant a lot to me. It illustrates many of my own thoughts about the risk/value of change... aiming for the postive even though you can never know the results ahead of time. And yes, Click hits that question head on (with slightly different results). But it deals with the same issues, the ramifications of power, of change, responsibility and potential (and responsibility to your potential).

I'm glad the ending read to you in that way; it's essentially the intended ending, forcing a reader to contemplate exactly the issues that you mention. That said, the intentionally ambiguous plot/ending allow quite a wide variety of interpretations (also intentional) and some people make up their mind earlier in the book and therefore only 'see' one ending. Which is fine - art is more interpretation than intention, sometimes. But it's always nice to know it works as intended, too, if you know what I mean.

And while I never would have linked Click to the movements you mentioned myself (at least in part due to my own lack of knowledge of those movements), I can definitely see what you're getting at. Because yes, Click is a product of its time. Relativity, confusion, memes, language as a means to positive change, media saturation, information overload, the promise of godhood/stardom everpresent yet always out of reach.

enjoy your beer!
