Bigger's ok but remember it sets the minimum vertical space for each comment. Short comments can end up taking a lot of space (look at camden's entry above this one). So not too big.

Can the 'user name' and 'user type' be moved to the right of the avatar? This helps the vertical problem but might create a problem for the horizontal direction (taking room from text).

It's smaller than the others because it's not square - and there is a max height/width. We can make the images bigger if everyone thinks it's a good idea.

I think it's a good idea. When there's a long thread it would make it easier to follow the back and forth. And members can always add their own avatar.

The only issue is does a Gravatar override an Identicon? On the profile page it looks like adding an avatar will but it's unclear for a Gravatar.

If you go to your profile page you should now see a tab for Avatar. This will allow you to upload an avatar which will be shown next to your forum posts (and soon, blog comments once the site is upgraded). The avatar you upload will permanently override any Gravatar you might have. There is also an option called 'Identicon' which essentially auto-creates a unique fractal type image based on your ip and name.

This new forum (and, eventually, the new site) are Gravatar enabled! What does this mean? Go to http://www.gravatar.com and set up an avatar to go along with your posts/replies/etc. They will automatically appear here and anywhere else that is Gravatar enabled (it's popular and will hopefully become even more so).

Hey all,

We just converted our forums to new software.

The only known issue is that you'll need to get your password reset to use these new forums. Once you are properly logged in, you should be able to go to your profile page and change your password to whatever you want.

We're in the midst of upgrading our entire site, and this is just one step along the way. This new forum software will (eventually) be better integrated with the rest of our site instead of being buried deep where no one ever finds it.

The other long term benefit of the software switch is that the user accounts will be the same as for the rest of our site - which will soon have a lot more focus on events, authors, and artists. For example, everyone associated with ASP will be able to post blogs. We also have a few other tricks up our sleeves in the longer term. Your forum account will be the same as on the site once the site itself makes the upgrade switch.

You'll know when - the main site will look quite different.

All the best,
Anyway, I bought Click last night after the reading at Powell's. The piece you read really spoke to me, as my grandma died about three weeks ago, and you read about the character's dying grandfather. I kept thinking, Yeah, I felt that, or I thought that.

I'm looking forward to more.

Hey, I'm glad you enjoyed the reading, though feel for your loss. In addition to 'Going Back', there's another chapter in Click you might appreciate for similar reasons - 'Their Starkness', about the loss of the narrator's uncle.

itheresa wrote:

I have been reading it. Maybe I'm a third of the way through. I get the feeling when I read it that I get when I watch a David Lynch film, that each scene is its own story.

I take that as a major compliment. Thank you. I agree that most chapters could be considered stand alone - though I also think there is a lot to be learned about each chapter through reading other chapters - imagery and events may take on new meaning.

Caleb wrote:

Strangely enough, that's exactly how I read the novel the third time through. I literally opened the book to a random page, read a chapter, then went on to another random chapter until I had all of them checked off. It was a completely different, but equally valid, I suspect, experience.

That's an equally high compliment. It feels really good to know people are digging deep into Click. I would think you likely learned a lot about the book reading it randomly. I almost read 'Above Me' at the reading until Christine pointed out that it was effectively set in the same room as 'Eyes and Cockroaches' (though one in memory, and one in dream/hallucination). That connection is extremely subtle, so I doubt anyone at the reading would have picked up on, but it led me to read 'Going Back' instead of 'Above Me'. Glad I did.

Anyway, thanks all for the kind words. Made my day.

There is no fixed limit - if somethings great, it's great regardless of word count. That said, anything over 10,000 would probably be on the long side. Ultimately, it'll be up to the individual editor for each anthology, though we're planning on having significantly less stories than FFTS had (46). This may mean there will be a slight preference for longer fiction over shorter, but again, quality will always win out.

Hope this helps!
Thanks for getting this thread started, it was a nice way to meet you all. I am kind of late on this but I hope you guys will read it.

I discovered Another Sky through reading the Chuck Palahniuk website and heard they were doing some great things. I read Click, which by the way Kris, was f'n real. After reading Click, I decided that I would try to be a part of something great like this and submit some of the material I have been working on lately. Still haven't heard back, but we'll see.

I am 24 years old and believe or not I am a Big Four Accountant from the East Coast of the states. I have been writing feverishly of late. I wrote mostly screenplays in college but I feel a novel is a more direct form of getting my message out. I travel all over the country every week for my job, so the material is of constant flow. I am basically trying to get my start and am writing in the mass amount of time my firm gives me to study for the CPA exam. Oops! I was looking for a place to submit some work and found this.

It would be nice to get to know you all.

Best,
Hola, everyone...

I'm Andrez Bergen, an expat Aussie muso/journalist living in Tokyo, Japan - I stumbled across this website just last month, and love the ideology and subversive inclinations at play here.

It's an added bonus that the people behind it are way cool as well!

Keep up the brilliant work...
Judging by the responses you've given me to date, I believe I can well and truly congratulate the team on this forte!

Once more? Thank YOU.
The phrase following "Please Note:" seems candid, and humane... You can only do what you can do, and most folks realize that.

I guess there's a variety of possible reasons for not sending a "Yup - submission received - please be patient" autoresponse e-mail.

- - -

You're not after first rights, I take it? An author not hearing from you for months could have sold the submission somewhere in the meantime, which could un-finalize your anthology contents after the announcement.

Strangely, we only changed that text about 3 hours ago - before that, it read along the lines of 'We'll respond to everybody within a day or two'. The problem was that this can be, and was, overwhelming.

The secondary issue is that we don't always know how long it will take. For example, if the submission is for an upcoming anthology we wait until we finalize the entire set of stories that will be in the anthology until we make any official announcements. If the submission is for a novel there's generally quite a few other submissions before it in line as well. It's usually difficult to give an accurate time assessment.

We thank you for your input - we will switch it back to how it was.
