Black Market Culture - Online Art

Craig @ 5:34 pm July 20, 2006

Black Market Culture is devoted to art, period.

Created and curated by Michael Fields, Black Market Culture launched in December of 2004. Based in Portland, Oregon, the website is host to an array of original artwork and photography from around the world. No art is sold through website, though in May 2006 Black Market Culture went from web to wall at the Goodfoot in Portland. The show, titled Manifestation, featured 20 artists from the site and brought artists together from across the country - many getting to meet each other in person for the first time.

Black Market Culture is a labor of love - an artwork showcase of varied styles. The site is currently host to 402 works of art by 38 different artists representing three countries and ten cities. The imagery is urban, it’s raw, it’s outsider. The collections of both new and established artists display a remarkable array of different media, such as:

* oil
* acrylic
* collage
* photography
* stencil & spray paint
* charcoal
* print making
* graffiti

The site also features a detailed list of upcoming Portland-area art-related events, many gallery resources, and an abundance of links. There are no ads and no fees whatsoever to artists or galleries. Creativity on the black market. Striking from the underground.

Original, inventive, occasionally disturbing, and always intriguing, the artists showcased at Black Market Culture are worthy of time and support. Why Black Market Culture? Because you never know what you can do unless you try.
